The Route
Fruit Routes makes use of pre-existing pavements, foot and cycle paths around the University campus. These can be navigated without the use of steps. However, except for areas of pavement adjacent to University Road, and for the paved paths between the David Davies Building and University Road (adjacent to the Transcendental Orchard), these are not paved. Unpaved areas can become uneven and muddy and we advise against the use of wheelchairs on these sections.
The Orchards
The Orchards are planted on grassy ground. Trees are planted on low-growing rootstock to enable harvesting as low to the ground as possible, and without the use of special equipment.
The Freeman Orchard has step-free access from Car Park 5.
The Barefoot Orchard can be accessed by crossing the road from the pavement adjacent to University Road. We are exploring the possibility of installing dropped kerbs for step-free access. It is fitted with wooden benches.
The Cider Orchard is adjacent to a paved walkway leading south from near the entrance to Burleigh Court car park. Some trees are on a small hillside.
The Burleigh Orchard can be accessed by a paved path leading along the south-easterly face of Burleigh Court Hotel and Conference Centre from its car park.
The Transcendental Orchard lies just beyond the end of a paved path from Elvyn Way (close to the junction with University Road). There are some unpaved, gentle slopes. The orchard is fitted with wooden benches. The orchard can also be accessed from University Road, but this is a steeper, unpaved slope.
There are step-free, paved paths providing access to the espalier/cordon planting alongside the David Davies Building, and in the courtyard between the David Davies Building, Keith Green Building and Burleigh Court.
