SUMMARY:Forest Gardening Weekend
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on weekend workshop with Tomas Remiarz\, author of ‘Forest Gardening in Practice’. \nAbout the course\nSaturday 13 and Sunday 14 September\, 9.30am – 5pm each day \nTickets are for the two days and attendees are expected to attend both days. \nWe are delighted to invite Tomas Remiarz\, a renowned authority on Forest Gardening\, to Fruit Routes this September for a special two-day workshop introducing the principles and practical applications of Forest Gardening. \nThe two-day workshop will allow you to plan and design your own forest garden. We will explore how to combine trees\, shrubs\, and perennial plants and organise planting\, harvesting\, and maintenance activities. Whether you are a beginner or have already started your garden project\, the guidance from Tomas Remiarz\, a leading educator and practitioner in the field of Forest gardening\, and local community herbalist Gisela Derrick will take your vision to the next level. Fruit Routes artist/co-ordinator Mita Solanky will be supporting the practical aspects of the course\, ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable weekend learning with nature in a safe and comfortable environment. \nThis course is suitable for beginners and experienced gardeners. We will use the Forest Gardening Design Principles and look at a best-practices that you can apply to your own garden scenario. \nForest Gardens have been shown to increase biodiversity\, soil health\, carbon capture\, and food sovereignty and nutrition. The course will demonstrate how a multi-layered method of growing food\, can create a beautiful space and provide abundant harvests for both humans and other ecosystem dependents. The course will provide an introduction in how to develop a Forest Garden in any type of green space\, whether a greenfield site or existing garden. You may use this design approach for any space you are looking after\, be it large or small\, urban or rural\, commercial or a private garden. Whatever your space\, the basic principles of Forest Gardening will be applicable to many environments. \nCourse outline\nWe will steer the course content based on the group interests as gathered from the pre-course booking questionnaire that all participants are invited to fill in. \nSaturday 13 September\, 9:30am-5pm: \nDay 1 will focus on the Forest Garden concept\, designing and planning your own Forest Garden\, and looking at real life case studies. \nSunday 14 September\, 9.30am-5pm: \nDay 2 will focus on site observation\, preparation\, selecting plants\, planting a food forest\, maintenance systems\, and succession and learning. \nThere will be opportunities through each day during break-out sessions for group learning through sharing of experiences. \nWhere is the course taking place?\nThe course is being hosted by the Fruit Routes project at Loughborough University\, allowing hands-on learning in the Fruit Routes Orchards. This will allow you to learn in an experiential way to illustrate the theory directly. The indoor learning will be based at International House\, on Loughborough University’s campus\, which has all the facilities for a relaxed but focussed learning environment with ready access to a garden and wildlife area. \nWe aim to create a welcoming and accessible course for all participants\, enabling time to explore details\, ask questions\, and share experiences within the group. \nThe number of participants is limited in order to maintain a good ratio of teaching time to discussion time. \nWho is the course for?\nThis course is suitable for beginners and experienced gardeners. \nThis course is for anyone who wants to learn about creating a forest garden – staff\, students\, professional gardners and members of the local community. You may want to turn your own green space into an edible garden\, or be involved in a community or organisation that has green spaces and want to transform them. Keen gardeners will be able to take ideas back to make their gardens more productive and wildlife friendly. Members of the community can learn how to apply forest gardening approaches to their green spaces\, to create richer wellbeing places that support a wider range of activities. Those working in organisations that have a role in managing green estates can adopt principles from Forest Gardening design to showcase cultural shifts towards better use of green spaces for biodiversity and sustainability. The course can aid policy makers and land workers seeking to transition to more agroecological land-use systems. \nWhat do I need to bring?\nLunch/snacks; Flask for water/hot-drinks; Notetaking materials; Waterproofs and outdoor shoes for walking in the orchards \nHow much does the course cost?\nThe course is a non-profit event as part of the Fruit Routes programme. We want the course to be accessible to anyone that is interested in learning\, regardless of their budget\, so we have a pay-what-you-can ticket system. Please select the ticket price which is affordable for you: \n\n£180 – Pay it forward rate so that others can receive support for the costs of their place\n£120 – Standard rate to cover the cost of your place\n£60 – Supported rate to help meet some of the costs of your place\n\n \nTickets are non-refundable unless the course is postponed or cancelled. \nBook your place at the Forest Gardening weekend \nAbout the tutors\n \nTomas Remiarz has been involved in creating and maintaining forest gardens across the UK and Europe for nearly 20 years. Tomas first encountered Forest Gardening in 1995 and has been learning and gathering his skills and knowledge over the years. He has been involved in designing\, planting and maintaining forest gardens across Britain and Europe\, working with individuals\, communities\, businesses\, charities and public bodies. Tomas is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and experience\, leading many courses on forest gardening and permaculture. He is inspired by helping people to realise their own forest garden visions.  \nAs a founder member of the Permaculture Association’s research advisory board\, he is particularly interested in studying polycultures and has produced several reports on the subject. \nTomas’ book Forest Gardening in Practice was the first comprehensive review of the subject and copies will be available during the course.   \nVisit Tomas’ website \n \nGisela Derrick is a Community herbalist\, she completed an apprenticeship with renowned Ayurvedic herbalist Anne McIntyre and a two year apprenticeship with the Plant Medicine School. She is currently completing her practitioner training with the Plant Medicine School to  qualify as a Medical Herbalist. Gisela is a founding member of the Incredible Edible Sileby Community Garden and Orchard. This year she is also taking part in community Seed saving training with the Gaia Foundation\, as a member of and in collaboration with the Incredible Edible Loughborough group.  \nGisela runs local foraging\, wild medicine\, herbal walks\, and herbal medicine making workshops. She also grows her own vegetables and medicinal plants organically\, supporting wildlife and soil health.   \nGisela discovered forest gardening a few years ago and decided to study further to design her own medicinal forest garden. This led her to the work of Tomas Remiarz and after meeting with him in a Permaculture event\, she felt inspired to share the principles of forest gardening with her local community\, and bring his teaching here in the midlands. Gisela will be providing additional facilitation during the course.  \nFacilities\nIndoor teaching will take place at International House. The space has level access to a kitchen and toilet facilities. \nRefreshments are available throughout the weekend\, with kitchen facilities for heating food and access to a fridge for keeping food fresh. Hot water\, and tea/coffee making facilities will be available all weekend. \nAccessibility\nThe indoor elements of the course are on the ground floor with step-free access\, however the outdoor elements include uneven terrain\, slopes and steps which are not accessible to wheelchair users or buggies. If you have any specific access requirements that you would like to discuss in advance of booking\, then please contact LU Arts by email: LUArts@lboro.ac.uk. \nGetting here\nInternational House is located in the central part of Loughborough University’s campus and can be reached by walking or cycling from Loughborough town centre. We encourage wherever possible that you travel here by public or shared transport to reduce the environmental impact of the event. The Sprint bus (operated by Kinchbus) connects the campus with Loughborough town centre and train station and runs regularly. The closest bus stop is the Accommodation Centre (third stop on campus). \nStudents\, staff and visitors are required to register their vehicle and pay to park on campus. Visitors should use the main entrance on Epinal Way. The nearest parking is in Car Park 4 and Car Park 3. \nFor information on registering and paying to park please visit the parking pages of the University website. \n  \nPlease note that Eventbrite processes data (including any personal data you may submit during your booking) outside of the European Economic Area. SUMMARY:Fruit Thinning event
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nJoin Loughborough University’s Gardens Team this summer at the time of year when they traditionally thin the fruit from the Fruit Routes orchards. Fruit thinning naturally occurs around the end of June for many fruit trees. Further thinning is done by the Gardens team to allow fewer fruit to mature on the tree\, a practice used to create a healthier autumn harvest. \nThe unripe fruits that have been harvested as part of the thinning can be put to many uses\, such as making vinegar\, jellies\, pickles and fruit cheese! \nIf you’d like to come along and harvest some of the early fruit with us\, then please bring your own tub or bag so you can take home anything you have picked. We’ll be meeting at the Barefoot Orchard at 12pm and will be there until 2pm. \nIt’s a beautiful time of year to come and spend your lunchtime in the lovely Fruit Routes Orchards. Everyone is welcome and feel free to bring your lunch with you. \nIf you want some ideas of how to use the unripe fruit or have a recipe to share\, why not join the Landscape and Gardening Society (LAGS) at their session later in the day. This jelly making and pickling workshop will take place at the LAGS garden on campus (a short walk from the Barefoot Orchard) from 2pm. \nWe recommend booking in advance for this event to help us manage numbers (see booking link below ‘What to bring’). We will keep you informed should we need to make any changes to the event due to the weather. \nThe nearest toilets on the day are located inside Pilkington Library\, a few minutes walk from the orchard. \nWhat to bring\nThis is an outdoor event so please wear sun protection and dress appropriately for the weather and the event\, including suitable footwear. We recommend you bring a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated. Don’t forget your own bag or tub if you would like to take home any harvested fruit. \nYou may bring your own snips or secateurs with you if you wish\, but please ensure they are clean. The University Gardens Team will provide some equipment as well. \nThere are a couple of benches in the orchard to sit on if you need to. Feel free to bring your own blanket to sit and take a rest and enjoy the orchard. \nBOOK YOUR FREE PLACE \nAccessibility\nBarefoot Orchard is on level ground. The route is not always on structured paths but is mostly flat. Some parts of the route are not accessible for wheelchair users or buggies so we do not recommend attending if this applies to you. If you have any specific accessibility requirements that you think we should know about\, please let us know in advance by emailing Sustainability@mailbox.lboro.ac.uk or LUArts@lboro.ac.uk and we will do our best to accommodate them. \nGetting here\nFor information on travelling to the University campus visit the location webpage on the University website. \nParking\nStudents\, staff and visitors are required to register their vehicle and pay to park on campus. Visitors should use the main entrance on Epinal Way. The nearest car park is opposite Pilkington Library. \nFor information on registering and paying to park please visit the parking pages of the University website. \n

SUMMARY:Institute of Advanced Studies Public Lecture: Environmental Performance
DESCRIPTION:Environmental Performance: Art\, Science\, and Trans Terminology for Ecological Justice in the Global Context by Professor Jane Chin Davidson\nProfessor Jane Chin Davidson is an IAS Residential Fellow. \nArtists since the 1960s-70s have used performance to restore environmentally fragile sites and to stage activist events in locations impacted by anthropogenic climate and species devastation. An archival effort to document these works\, this project seeks to develop trans-disciplinary methodologies for studying environmental art;  including the past and present activism of artists\, such as for the Fruit Routes project here at the Loughborough campus\, revealing the ways in which art and science can be used to engage communities at the grassroots level. \nIn the global context of environmental humanities\, performance becomes a means to explore trans-national\, trans-corporeal\, and trans-human identities in the Anthropocene. A review of the 1990s work of contemporary artists in China recognizes the use of Chinese performance traditions for addressing the oncoming capitalist industrialization of the country’s landscapes. The eco-feminist discourse in China contributes to the global acknowledgment of the patriarchal regimes that have authorized extractive modes of capitalist domination over all of planetary life. \nThis is a hybrid event and you can choose to attend in-person or online via Zoom. For those joining in-person\, lunch will be served after the seminar from 1pm. Please select the appropriate booking button at the bottom of the IAS event page to book your place. \nThis event is organised by Loughborough University’s Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS). We are promoting it through Fruit Routes’ channels as we believe it may be of interest to our audience.

The fire ceremony will commence at 2pm. \nBarefoot Colour Play\nBarefoot Orchard (opposite University Lodge\, near to Pilkington Library)\nApproximately 3-5pm \n \nThe artist has taken inspiration from the change in season and the colours that the environment bursts into at this time of year. Based on the Festival of Holi\, which is celebrated in Gujarat in India\, amongst other regions\, people are invited to embrace their playful and youthful nature and transgress social norms by throwing colours at each other. The colour play will end with sharing some Springtime teas and Holi treats. \nAll powder colours being used are non-toxic and water-soluble (natural vegetable dyes and cornflour) and can be easily washed off. We recommend you wear washable light coloured clothes for the best experience of colour throwing! \nThis event is part of Sustainability Fortnight at Loughborough University. Children under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult. \nInformation about the locations of the events and accessibility is provided at the bottom of this page. Please be aware that events and locations may need to be changed at short notice dependent on the weather conditions. We will update people on the day as best we can. \n* except for A Jar of Memory Pickles (see details below) \n \n\nFriday 13 October\n15:00-18:00 Apple pressing with Transition Loughborough press. Update 11/10/23 – the apple pressing has been postponed due to the weather forecast. We are still expecting to run this on Saturday 14 October from 11am. \nLocation: Prairie Garden \n15:00-17:00 A Jar of Memory Pickles with artist Janhavi Sharma. Discover how hand-made food inspires Janhavi’s work when viewed as an archival material. She will share anecdotal histories derived from personal experience and reflect on food-making practises like pickling and preserving. We will examine how these practices hold spaces for storymaking and storytelling. \nJoin us in the simple act of sharing stories while we create our own personal ‘Memory Pickles’\, thinking about the tastes and stories we want to pickle. \nWe encourage all participants to bring with them a clean empty glass jar with a lid. \nPlaces at this event are limited so please register your interest in advance by emailing Environment@lboro.ac.uk. \nLocation: International House \n  \n17:00-18:00 Fruit Routes Twilight Walk with Mita Solanky. A processional walk around Fruit Routes with lantern jars. Hot drinks will be served from 18:00-18:30. Update 13/10/23 – this event will still go ahead as planned as there are parts of the walk that are sheltered. \nLocation: Barefoot Orchard \n18:30-19:30 Night Jar Ensemble. \nIMPORTANT NOTE – due to the weather conditions\, the Night Jar Ensemble on Friday has been cancelled. It will take place on Saturday as planned. \n  \nSaturday 14 October\n11:00-16:00 Apple pressing with Transition Loughborough press. Help press juice or bring your own apples and containers to make fresh juice or cider. \nLocation: Prairie Garden \n11:00-14:00 Harvest Produce Swap. Bring your home or locally-grown fruit and veg to swap\, raw or transformed into something delicious in a jar. Recipe ideas also welcome. \nLocation: LAGS Garden \n11:00-13:00 Summer in a Jar with Landscaping and Gardening Society (LAGS) members. Make your own dried herbs\, foraged jams and jellies. \nWe encourage all participants to bring with them a clean empty glass jar with a lid. \nLocation: LAGS Garden \n11:00-13:00 Jam Jar Lantern making with Mita Solanky (drop-in activity). Create your own oil-lamp vigil in a jam jar\, decorated using foraged autumn leaves\, berries and seeds. This is a self-led activity inspired by the artist’s childhood memories of an oil-lamp that would burn throughout the day outside their pantry of rice\, grains and preserved foods. This vigil was an offering of gratitude for the bounty and abundance that the natural world provides but also a marker of using this abundance with care. The slow burn symbolises how our consumption should also burn slowly. Why not bring your jam jar lantern along to the Twilight Walk. \nWe encourage all participants to bring with them a clean empty glass jar with a lid. \nLocation: Walled Garden \n11:00-14:00 Bake-Off entries. Enter our annual bake-off by making something savoury or sweet (including preserves) with locally-grown produce. Prizes for children and adults. Free to enter. We are delighted to welcome Charnwood Eco Hub as guest judges. \nBake-Off entries must be received by 2pm. You must include a full list of ingredients and allergens with your entry. If you do not include this then your entry may not be able to be judged and it can’t be shared with the rest of the bakes at the prizegiving tea at 3pm. \nLocation: LAGS Garden \n \n13:00-14:00 Jarvest Bells with Mita Solanky (drop-in activity). Create your own ankle bells for dancing\, which can be used at our workshop with Bare Bones Border Morris Dancers later in the afternoon. This activity is inspired by the folk traditions of agrarian societies that held some form of community dancing at harvest time. Mita grew up in the UK celebrating a form of Gujerati folk dance known as Garba\, which is very similar to the English Morris Dancing traditions. The bells can be seen as symbolising the seed heads and signifying hope\, making a joyful sound before entering winter. \nLocation: Walled Garden \n15:00 Jarvest Bake-Off winners announced. Tea and bakes served until 16:00. \nLocation: LAGS Garden \n \n16:00-17:30 Bare Bones Border Morris Dancers performance\, workshop and public dance session. Enjoy a live dance performance and learn a few Morris dance moves. No experience needed. After a short break\, we will all join in a dance together and you can wear your Jarvest dancing bells and make some joyous noise. \nLocation: Walled Garden \n17:00-18:00 Fruit Routes Twilight Walk with Mita Solanky.
